honesty.

Yesterday I received this letter in the mail at the store:

It says:

Hi Erin,

My apologies, enclosed find $35.00 for charms. I am embarrassed to have found 2 charms in my 3 year old's pocket today when I was doing laundry.

I looked online and saw that the 2 charms would be $30. This obviously was my fault; I should have been watching her more closely.

I have another lesson to teach her, again my apologies.

Have a Blessed Day

I so admire this honesty!

And I have to admit- been there before! I've had to call and pay Wal-Mart over the phone for stuff my kids snuck into their pockets! And then we had to chat about not stealing :)

Have you dealt with something like this with your kids?

I love her honesty! That's very admirable.

We have had to do this before as well. It definitely pays to be honest. Always important to let your children see you pay, or have them pay out of their allowance, if they receive one.

Oh, that is a great person, not because she sent the money, but because she is making a point to teach her daughter a valuable lesson. This was awesome to post because we can learn from this woman's actions.

I have not had to deal with this yet with my 4 year old. I will definitely teach her about it and not just clean up her mistakes.

Love this, as unfortunately this kind of honesty is rare in today's society!

how nice of that mom, goes to show you that she will be teaching those values to her family, good for her! I assume she liked the charms though, LOL she did not send those back, just the money, ha ha!!

I LOVE this! Seriously, that is the best letter in the world. Great parenting too, recognizing it and making it right. My kids have not done this to anyone but I did when I was little. What's worse, is that I lived with the guilt of that for years! It wasn't until I was an adult that I forgave myself for it and it really wasn't that big of a deal.

But, seriously, this is a great letter!

When my youngest was about 4 he took some washers from the local hardware store..His grandfather was with him and discovered after they were home what he had done..He was marched back to the store and had to apologize..As far as I know it has never happened again.Good for Mom for teaching her daughter and for making amends!!

Yes I have been through this with all my kids actually! Its a very difficult and embarassing thing to go through! But at least honest and the right thing is done in the end! Just like one time I recieved an item one time from a lady that I had looked ay but my payment didnt go through, I contacted her to notify her of the glitch!

That's awesome. I love that she did that. I won't say how old I am but when I mention Ben Franklin some of you will be able to figure it out. I can remember like it was yesterday stealing candy from the penny candy aisle and my mom promptly marching me back in that store to not only return it but offer up a very sincere apology. Lesson learned Mom. Never did it again!!

What a great letter...and I can relate. My son picked up some little do-dadd at ACE and I made him go back in and return it. He was mortified! The owner was so nice and thanked him for doing the right thing, so I hope it was a lesson well learned.

That's great! When I was little (maybe 3 or 4) I took a few coins from a dresser at a friend's house. My mom found them, got me to confess, and then drove me back over there to apologize and return the money. Obviously the experience has stuck with me all these years later!
A few years ago was at a used book store with my sons who were maybe 3 and 1 at the time and a small board book made its way into the stroller basket without my knowing or paying. When I went back the next day to pay for it (like $3) the cashier looked at me like I was nuts!

Oh yes unfortunately. My daughter took some nice looking pieces ofglass at a ceramic store where we were making glass pendants... :-( I considered having her bring it back and apologize in person (she was 9) but since it was a first offense I decided to be forgiving and I'm the one who brought it back and apologized. :-S I sure hope she learned her lesson though...

Love it!

I remember being about 3, maybe 4 years old, and stealing a Hello Kitty lip balm {actually it was My Melody, if you're a child of the 70s/80s!}. My mom found it when we got to the car and she marched me right back to the store to give it back to the lady, apologize to her, AND pay her. I was so embarassed.

The lady behind the counter said I could keep it for being 'honest' but my mom said, "no, thank you".

I then got a whole spill when we got back in the car!

Learned my lesson FULL & WELL!

Way to go to that mom for teaching her kids great moral values!

you know those toys they put in the checkout lane at walmart? i was unpacking groceries one day, and found three of the pretend disney camera phones in one of the bags! i was so emabarrassed - then checked my receipt, and had been charged for them! apparently, my kiddo put them on the belt without me seeing, and the checker rang them up! :) kudos to that momma for her honesty!

Love the honesty...isn't it sad we live in a time where we are so shocked when people do something so kind and honest?

Praise her for raising her babies right!

That was a beautiful post!
I think most mothers have dealt with this problem!
I have always gone back and pay for items that I was not charged for and the kids took part in that lesson too!
They are grown now, but they remember those little good deeds!

Not yet, but I am sure it will happen at some point or another. Little ones just need to be taught (like evrything else) what stealing is and the difference between finding a treasure and taking a treasure that belongs to someone.

I bet inside that little tot's head was, "Oooh, pretty, sparkly treasures" not "Oh, I think I'll steal this".

I applaud the mama for her honesty; that kind of example is the real lesson for children!

I was the one caught taking stuff. I was probably about 4 years old and I still remembered like it was yesterday. I stuffed some candy in my mouth right at the same time that my mom and the sales person saw me. I had to pay out of my savings and my mom gave me the "talk". Believe me when I say that these type of lessons stay with you forever.

That awesome she sent that to you! There aren't that many honest people left as far as I can tell. I haven't had to deal with stealing yet. Hoping that day doesn't come. lol

I was at a vintage clothing store once and when we left I noticed something dragging out of the stroller. My 2 year old son grabbed a sweater. We were only a block away so I turned right around and returned it. The owner laughed and completely understood.
The embarrassing part was that I just had a conversation with the owner about how I knew his sister!

Not really with my kids but I've walked out of the store before and found stuff "hidden" in my cart and I had to go back in and pay for it.

The mom who wrote that letter will raise a child with integrity. Our kids are watching what we do. Thanks for posting this.

I haven't yet dealt with anything like this with my son. But I admire the honesty of this mama. What an example she is setting for her child! Just today I went to a Bible/book study with some other moms, and we talked about how we need to model the values we're seeking to teach our own children. We cannot give what we don't have ourselves. So it's a challenge for all of us. Thank you for sharing this post. I am blessed by it.

I haven't experienced it as a parent, but I did as a kid. I was quite young, but I remember it very well. I stole a sucker from Laura Secord, but forgot about until my Mom saw it sticking out of my pocket. She marched me back to the store and made me apologize. I certainly learned my lesson and never tried it again.

My oldest daughter took a Jesus Saves guitar pick from our local Christian Bookstore. That was a humbling experience for both of us to go back to the store. She and I stood in line, and she returned the pick to the woman at the register and apologized for taking something without paying for it. The woman at the register was so kind and gracious, and I hope that she has learned her lesson!

Thank you for sharing! It is wonderful to see people of integrity!

I was one of those kids before. At the age of 5 or so, I stole a New Kids on The Block necklace. My mother took me back to the store and I had to apologize to the store manager. Needless to say, I learned my lesson. :)

My son who is now 32 was about 7 and helped himself to a package of gum which I discovered when we'd left the store and were getting into the car.

He was a VERY shy boy and I made him walk back into the store, ask to speak to the store manager and apologize and explain why he taken the gum. He was so embarrassed and has told me what a lesson it was having to go back in there and face the manager.
